Inspired by Baudrillard’s notion of the “copy without original,” Glerum engages with the idea of identity as something performative and malleable—particularly in the context of childhood, where the self is often shaped through projection and mimicry. Video games become a central metaphor: in these virtual spaces, protagonists are frequently designed as blank slates—just compelling enough to inhabit, yet empty enough to be universally relatable. In this work, a simulated face—buried beneath a chaotic cascade of colorful hair—is manipulated through a physical joystick, the archetypal symbol of gameplay. As the joystick is moved, the hair shifts accordingly, teasing the possibility of revealing the face behind the hair. And yet, the true face never appears. By creating a playful yet unsettling interaction, Glerum reflects on the tension between visibility and concealment, control and opacity. Simulacra becomes a meditation on the childish yearning to see and be seen.
